Maya KOPITZEVA (Gagra, Georgia 1924 – Saint Petersburg 2005)

Maya Kuzminichna Kopitzeva is regarded as one of the major representatives of the Leningrad School of painting, most famous for her still life works.
She was born in 1924 in Georgia, but the following year the family moved to St. Petersburg. Pupil of Boris Fogel, Leonid Ovsiannikov and Alexander Zaytsev at the Ilya Repin Institute, in 1951 she graduated in Boris Ioganson’s workshop. Since that year Maya Kopitseva began an intense productive and exhibition activity in Russia and abroad.
She was a member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists, which before 1992 was the Leningrad branch of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation. In 2001 she was awarded the honorary title of Artist of the Russian Federation.

The museum and exhibition center “Petersburg Artist” in St. Petersburg dedicated an important and large retrospective to Maya Kopitzeva from October 2020 to January 2021.
