MAYA KOPITZEVA. The colors of light
10 February 2023 @ 10:00 - 19 March 2023 @ 19:00
Maya Kopitzeva is considered one of the leading representatives of the Leningrad School of painting and one of the brightest Russian post-impressionist colorists of the second half of the 20th century.
Born in 1924 in Georgia, but raised and trained in St. Petersburg, Maya Kopitzeva lived a particularly significant period of her artistic career in Samarkand in Uzbekistan, where the Academy had been transferred during World War II. The unusual living conditions and the beauty of the Uzbek architecture undoubtedly remained imprinted in the memory of the young painter, as well as the stay at the Academic dacha near Volochek in the Tver region (1953), where the authentic flowering of his pictorial talent began. In her works, in fact, we can trace both the sense of colors and decorations of Islamic art assimilated in Samarkand and the echo of the uncontaminated nature known during her stay at the dacha.
Her still lifes, the protagonists of the exhibition, are paradoxically “very lively”, because they do not fit into the narrow frames of the genre. The viewer is struck by the overall originality of the composition and by the strong color combinations, reinforced by thick dynamic brushstrokes.
Among the many official awards, in 2001 she was awarded the title of Emeritus Artist of the Russian Federation.
The “Peterburgskiy Khudozhnik” Museum and Exhibition Center in St. Petersburg dedicated a major and extensive retrospective to Maya Kopitzeva from October 20, 2020 to January 10, 2021.
