OLGA AND GLEB. LIFE AND ART
3 December 2022 @ 10:00 - 15 January 2023 @ 19:00
Olga Bogaevskaja and Gleb Savinov (both 1915 – 2000) are considered among the main representatives of the Leningrad School of painting and together they have traveled a long path both in life and in art. Over twenty years after their death, this exhibition aims to be a tribute not only to the individual painters and to their distinct personalities and careers, but also to the human and creative sharing that has characterized their entire existence.
They met at the Leningrad Academy of Fine Arts, where they were classmates, and in 1940 they graduated and married.
They have always nourished, parallel to the political and propaganda subjects commissioned, their artistic passion with the simple reality close to them, identifying everyday life as an aesthetic ideal. Their family, declined through portraits, genre scenes, domestic interiors and still lifes, prevails in their production: filtered by their pictorial eye, subjects apparently obvious become unique, everyday moments appear rare, the ordinary proves extraordinary. Sensitive interpreters able to grasp the most delicate emotional suggestions, they do not fear the “banality” of a subject and in their hands a detail can become the protagonist. In their works life is fully represented through intimate and familiar atmospheres, but even through landscapes and still lifes. Their style, a so-called post-impressionist Soviet figurativism, although with individual characteristics, is clean, lines are soft, the definition of the image is meditated, the brush stroke plain, the palette is lively with colors imbued with light. This happy family and creative union will last sixty years, ending for both of them in the month of November 2000.
On display watercolors, pastels and especially oils, the size of which varies from very small to large.
In December the gallery will be open from Monday to Sunday 10.00 -12.30 am; 3.30 – 7 pm.
