RUSSIAN FAIRY TALES. Marina Uspenskaja and Russian Masters

Born in Moscow in 1925, Marina Uspenskaya is one of the most famous Russian illustrators of children’s books. During her long career she created images for about 200 children’s books, published in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, France, India and Japan. Her fame is mainly linked to the illustration of the traditional Russian fairy tales, including Snegurochka (The Snow Maiden). She worked for the leading Russian publishing houses (Detskaya Literatura, Detgiz, Malysh) and was one of the leading artists of the famous magazine for children Murzilka from 1958 to 1960. In total, her illustrations have been reproduced in more than 115 million books and postcards.
In the exhibition there are works (watercolours, gouaches, pencil) that give life not only to many fantastic stories, but also to everyday life through the eyes of a child. Marina Uspenskaya, in fact, has got the rare gift of being able to watch the daily life with innocent eyes, being able to communicate through pictures the joy of being children, even in an adult world not always cozy. There are also works by other Russian artists of the same period, whose subjects focuse on childhood. Most of them, including Yakov Kozlov, Fyodor Reshetnikov, Sergej Tumakov, Aleksandra Saikina, Vsevolod Solodov, Dmitry Pyatkin, Olga Deineko, are exposed in our gallery for the first time.
